RESOLUTION 2007-005

RESOLUTION OPPOSING MILITARY ACTION AGAINST IRAN, DEMANDING USE OF DIPLOMATIC MEANS TO RESOLVE ISSUES WITH IRAN, AND SUPPORTING THE IRAN NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION ACT OF 2007

WHEREAS, there are highly credible reports that the Bush Administration has intensified planning for a possible major air attack on Iran, even giving serious attention to the option of using nuclear weapons, for the alleged purpose of derailing Iran’s nuclear weapons program;

WHEREAS, in reality there is no imminent danger posed by Iran: the United States government itself estimates it will be 5-10 years before Iran can make a single nuclear weapon and some analysts have said it could be as late as 2020;

WHEREAS, the National Academy of Sciences has determined that the use of such weapons would "create massive clouds of radioactive fallout that could spread far from the site of the attack,” and become deadly for hundreds of thousands Iranians and citizens of surrounding countries;

WHEREAS, independent polls show that more than 70% of Iranians support better relations with the US;

Be it resolved by the Snohomish County Democratic Central Committee, that our elected members of the U.S. Congress should exercise their oversight responsibilities by: (1) opposing any and all actions leading to preemptive military strikes against Iran; (2) demanding the truth from the Bush administration about its goals and plans for a possible attack on Iran; (3) demanding that the Bush Administration exhaust every diplomatic means to resolve any issues with Iran; and (4) continuing to call for a complete and immediate end to the war in the region; and

Be it further resolved by the Snohomish County Democratic Central Committee, that U.S. Congress immediately pass the Iran Nuclear Non-Proliferation Act of 2007 (H. R. 770), prohibiting the use of funds for “any covert action for the purpose of causing regime change in Iran or to carry out any military action against Iran in the absence of an imminent threat, in accordance with international law;” and

Be it further resolved by the Snohomish County Democratic Central Committee, that the Washington State Legislature adopt a joint memorial to the President of the United States and the Congress opposing military action against Iran; and

Be it further resolved by the Snohomish County Democratic Central Committee, that a suitable copy of this resolution shall be sent to George W. Bush, President of the United States, members of the U.S. Congress representing Snohomish County, members of the Washington State Legislature representing Snohomish County, and the Washington State Democratic Central Committee.
